Samsung is set to launch its cloud gaming service inside the Samsung Game Launcher on Galaxy phones. According to the Korea Economic Daily, the formal launch is expected to take place during Samsung’s developer conference on October 5th. The cloud service has been in beta testing for a few months and is primarily aimed at mobile games, distinguishing it from other cloud gaming platforms that focus on PC and console games. This move by Samsung appears to be an effort to recover game-install-ad revenue that has been affected by ad targeting restrictions in recent years.
Jong Hyuk Woo from Samsung spoke to VentureBeat in August, highlighting the potential benefits of cloud streaming for mobile game publishers. He stated that around 90% of people who express interest in a game through an ad do not end up playing it. Cloud streaming could eliminate the need for downloads, installations, and visits to the app store, simplifying the user acquisition process and reducing inefficiencies.
This move by Samsung comes at a time when the company is facing financial challenges due to slowing smartphone sales. By leveraging its existing hardware, Samsung is exploring new revenue streams, including ads and paid game streaming.
It is worth noting that Samsung already operates the Gaming Hub game-streaming app for its smart TVs. However, Game Launcher, the standalone cloud gaming service, is specifically designed for phones. This distinction ensures that users can easily identify the purpose of each service within Samsung’s gaming ecosystem.
More details about Samsung’s cloud gaming service are expected to be revealed during the Samsung Developer Conference. This conference is one of many technology events taking place this fall.
