Sean Tuohy, the adoptive father who was portrayed by Tim McGraw in the hit movie “The Blind Side,” is responding to the allegations made by former NFL star Michael Oher. Tuohy strongly denies Oher’s claims that he and his wife, Leigh Anne, exploited him for fame and money. Tuohy is devastated by these accusations and insists that his family made little money from the success of the movie.
In a court filing in Tennessee, Oher accused the Tuohys of taking advantage of him for their own gain. Tuohy, however, claims that he never tricked Oher into getting into a conservatorship and did not make millions of dollars from it. Instead, he explains that the conservatorship was necessary to comply with NCAA regulations. As a booster at Ole Miss, Tuohy was informed that for Oher to attend the university, he had to be considered part of the family.
Tuohy sat Oher down and explained that if he wanted to go to Ole Miss, they believed he had to be officially part of the family. “This would do that, legally,” Tuohy told Oher. To ensure everything was done properly, the Tuohys consulted lawyers who advised them that they couldn’t legally adopt Oher because he was over 18. The only option they had was to pursue a conservatorship. Tuohy emphasizes that they were adamant about following all legal procedures and even made sure Oher’s biological mother was present in court.
Tuohy expresses that if Oher wanted to end the conservatorship, he would respect his decision. Contrary to Oher’s allegations, Tuohy vehemently denies using the conservatorship as a means to negotiate a lucrative movie deal with Fox that would benefit him and his family. He asserts that they did not make any significant money from the movie adaptation of “The Blind Side.” The author of the book on which the movie was based, Michael Lewis, generously shared half of his share with the Tuohys, and each family member received around $14,000.
Tuohy clarifies that he had no financial need for the money from the movie, as he had previously sold his fast-food franchises for over $200 million. He finds it upsetting that anyone would think he would want to profit from his children. Tuohy’s main concern is his family’s well-being and happiness rather than financial gain.
He also emphasizes that his family and Oher had a close relationship in the years following the release of the movie. However, Tuohy noticed a strain in their bond about a year and a half ago. He deeply feels the allegations made by Oher are insulting, but he acknowledges that the world can be unpredictable and that such situations are unfortunately part of life. The accusations have upset everyone involved in the situation.
Tuohy’s response to Oher’s allegations provides a different perspective on their relationship. He explains the legal reasons behind the conservatorship and refutes the claim that he and his family made significant money from the movie. Tuohy’s focus remains on maintaining a healthy and supportive environment for his family, and he hopes that the situation can be resolved peacefully.
