Leigh Bardugo, the author of the popular book series “Shadow and Bone,” recently shared her thoughts after learning that the Netflix adaptation of her books has been canceled after two seasons. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Bardugo expressed her disappointment while also expressing gratitude for the opportunity to see her work brought to life on screen.
The television series, based on Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, followed the story of orphan cartographer Alina Starkov as she navigates a war-torn world using her unique gifts. Portrayed by Jessie Mei Li, the character of Alina Starkov became a beloved figure for fans of the series. Unfortunately, hopes for a spinoff based on Bardugo’s “Six of Crows” were also dashed with the news of the show’s cancellation.
In her Instagram post, Bardugo shared, “The news hit me hard. I’m heartbroken and deeply disappointed, but I’m also trying to hold onto my very real gratitude.” She acknowledged that many authors never get to see their work adapted, and some who do end up regretting the experience. Bardugo considers herself lucky to have been able to look at the adaptation with pride and joy.
As an executive producer on the project, Bardugo also took the time to express her appreciation for the show’s writers, crew, performers, and most importantly, the fans. The cast of “Shadow and Bone” included talented actors such as Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, and Ben Barnes, who brought the characters to life.
Bardugo also acknowledged the loyal fan base of the show, stating, “We’re book people and that means we never stop imagining that magic can be real.” She ended her post by sharing that she planned to have a cry and maybe a drink before continuing to see where the story will take her next. Among those responding to her message was Ben Barnes, who posted a heart emoji in the comments section, showing his appreciation for his time on the show.
The cancellation of “Shadow and Bone” comes as part of a larger wave of cancellations by Netflix, which also includes shows like “Glamorous,” “Agent Elvis,” “Captain Fall,” and “Farzar.” This decision comes as Hollywood returns to work following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, signaling a shift in the industry as productions resume and new projects are developed.
As fans and creators process the news of the show’s cancellation, the legacy of “Shadow and Bone” and its impact on audiences will continue to be felt. While the end of the series may bring disappointment, Leigh Bardugo’s words of gratitude and hope for the future serve as a reminder of the lasting impact of the Grishaverse and the characters that have captured the hearts of fans around the world.
