Every year, people around the world gather to witness the spectacular Perseids meteor shower. This incredible event occurs when tiny debris, remnants of the Swift-Tuttle comet that passed by Earth in 1992, enter our planet’s atmosphere at a staggering speed of 133,200 miles per hour. As they travel through the atmosphere, these debris reach temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a mesmerizing light show that captivates viewers.
Living near Joshua Tree National Park, I am aware that this popular viewing location will likely be crowded with tourists during the Perseids meteor shower. To have a more remote and undisturbed experience, I decide to venture to a secluded location using my 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison. This powerful off-road vehicle is capable of taking me anywhere I desire, allowing me to escape the crowds and enjoy the night sky in peace.
I have always been a fan of the midsize Colorado ZR2, and I am excited to see the full-size Silverado receiving the same premier off-road treatment. Equipped with a crew cab and a short bed, my tester model features a robust 6.2-liter V8 engine, boasting an impressive 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, it comes with front and rear differential lockers, a 2.0-inch lift, and Multimatic shocks that set the ZR2 apart from other trucks. These shocks, inspired by Formula 1 technology, provide precise tuning and a firm ride on the pavement, but adjust to soften the ride when off-roading.
To elevate the ZR2 Bison package even further, Chevrolet collaborated with the renowned off-road parts maker American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). The vehicle is equipped with front and rear steel bumpers, rock rails, and steel skid plates that protect the front and rear differentials, transfer case, and fuel tank. Additionally, AEV 18-inch wheels are wrapped with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, providing excellent traction on various terrains. The Bison also features a six-way Multi-Flex tailgate, further enhancing its functionality and versatility. The cost of adding the Bison package to a 2023 Silverado is $7,895, but it may be slightly higher for a 2024 model.
To begin my adventure, I arrange to meet some friends at the SlashX Cafe, located outside Barstow, California. The drive to the café is smooth and effortless, thanks to the powerful V8 engine and the optional Technology package with adaptive cruise control. As I navigate the roads, I appreciate the rear camera mirror, which provides a wider angle of view in this large truck. The interior of the Silverado is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch infotainment screen. The infotainment system includes Google integration and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Physical buttons and dials for essential functions, such as active lane control and parking sensors, offer convenience and ease of use.
After enjoying a delicious meal at the SlashX Cafe, my friends and I set off to find Ericksen Dry Lakebed. The initial stretch of the journey poses no challenge for the ZR2 Bison, as it effortlessly maneuvers through the terrain. However, the sheer size of the truck requires careful navigation, and I must dodge bushes and obstacles along the way. As we encounter a steep and rocky downhill section, the hill descent control system activates to ensure a smooth descent. The Bison’s robust build and skid plates protect the vehicle from any damage, and the Off-Road mode optimizes stability and traction control for dirt roads. The rear differential lock allows for exciting dirt shenanigans, with no speed limitations.
While the ZR2 Bison is often compared to other off-road trucks like the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ram 1500 TRX, it distinguishes itself by offering a more versatile and capable off-road experience. While those trucks excel at go-fast antics, the ZR2 Bison is better suited for longer off-road journeys. With its impressive payload capacity of 1,520 pounds and towing capability of 8,800 pounds, the Bison surpasses its desert-running competitors. It also offers useful towing aids such as a side blind-zone camera, automatic trailer light test, and a towing checklist for safety and convenience.
Although the ZR2 Bison package adds considerable value to the Silverado, there are some aspects that may be questioned. The decision to fit the truck with 33-inch tires instead of 35-inch tires may alienate some customers who prefer the larger size for aesthetic reasons. Additionally, while the steel bumpers and boron steel skid plates are great additions, they can be obtained from the aftermarket at a lower cost. The Bison package, priced at $7,895 for the 2023 model year, may be an unnecessary expense when considering these factors.
As the sun sets and darkness envelops the landscape, I find a quiet spot, set up my chair and watch as the stars begin to twinkle. The Milky Way emerges above the bed of the Silverado, and I crack open a beverage to fully immerse myself in this incredible experience. The first meteor streaks across the sky, and it’s clear that tonight will be a night to remember. With the reliability and capabilities of the Silverado ZR2 Bison, I have no doubts that it will safely transport me home in the morning, completing an unforgettable adventure.
Chevrolet provided a Silverado ZR2 Bison for Motor Authority to bring you this firsthand report, and nature provided the breathtaking show that accompanied it.
