Some Like It Hot, the Tony-winning musical based on the 1959 MGM and United Artists film of the same name, recently announced that it will be closing on Broadway in December. Producers revealed that the show’s run will come to an end in 13 weeks, with its final performance scheduled on December 30th at the Shubert Theatre.
The musical, which made history with nonbinary star J. Harrison Ghee winning the Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical, has been well-loved by audiences. Producers Robert Wankel and Neil Meron expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to bring this iconic comedy film to the stage in a fresh and innovative way. They thanked the creative team, cast, and company for their work in creating an entertaining and moving show that has delighted audiences for the past year at the Shubert Theatre. The producers also announced their excitement for the upcoming national tour next season and a future West End production.
Some Like It Hot received 13 Tony Award nominations and joined a few other struggling productions in benefiting from the usual boost in box office sales that award-winning shows experience following the ceremony. In June, after the musical’s wins, its weekly box office gross reached over $1 million before gradually declining.
This year, both the musical and the Tony Awards gained additional attention due to the initial denial of a waiver for the televised ceremony during the writers’ strike. However, the Tonys eventually proceeded as an unscripted broadcast on June 11th after the Writers Guild of America agreed not to picket the event.
In addition to winning the Tony for Best Lead Actor, Some Like It Hot also received awards for Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Costumes.
Although the show will be concluding its Broadway run, fans of Some Like It Hot can look forward to a national tour in 2024 and a West End production in 2025. These future productions will be produced by The Shubert Organization and Neil Meron in partnership with Ambassador Theatre Group.
Some Like It Hot originally opened on December 11, 2022, following previews in November. The musical features a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw. The original cast includes J. Harrison Ghee, Christian Borle, Adrianna Hicks, Kevin Del Aguila, and NaTasha Yvette Williams.
The show was produced by The Shubert Organization and Neil Meron, along with co-production from MGM on Stage. Other co-producers include Roy Furman, Robert Greenblatt, James L. Nederlander, Kenny Leon, Hunter Arnold, John Gore Organization, The Dalgleish Library Company Group, Sheboygan Conservatory Partners, Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Bob Boyett, Cue to Cue Productions, Janet and Marvin Rosen, The Araca Group, Concord Theatricals, Marc Howard, Independent Presenters Network, Juanita Jordan, Jujamcyn Theaters, Henry R. Muñoz III, Ostar, and Mariah Carey. D. S. Moynihan served as executive producer.
As the final weeks of the Broadway run of Some Like It Hot approach, audiences have the opportunity to experience this beloved musical for a little while longer before it goes on to captivate audiences on a national tour and a future West End production.
