Sony is making strides to enhance the PlayStation 5 (PS5) experience through a new software beta that introduces a range of exciting features and improvements. The beta, which is currently rolling out in select countries, includes support for Dolby Atmos, increased M.2 SSD storage capacity, and various enhancements to the user interface (UI).
One of the most significant additions is the inclusion of Dolby Atmos support. In PS5 games, Sony’s proprietary 3D Audio implementation, known as Tempest 3D AudioTech, will now be compatible with Dolby Atmos devices such as soundbars, TVs, and home theater systems. This means that players can enjoy even greater levels of immersion in the audio experience of their games. Media apps like Netflix will also be able to update their applications on the PS5 to incorporate Dolby Atmos audio, further enhancing the entertainment experience on the console.
The PS5 currently supports up to 4TB of expandable M.2 SSD storage. However, with this beta software, Sony is doubling the storage limit to a more spacious 8TB. Although users will still need an M.2 SSD that meets the minimum requirements, such as a speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, the increased storage capacity provides PS5 owners with a wider range of storage options.
Sony is also introducing several UI improvements and quality of life changes with this software update. Users now have the option to mute the PS5 beep sound that occurs when turning the console on or off, or when it enters rest mode. Additionally, Sony is offering the ability to adjust the beep volume, allowing players to customize their audio experience further.
Another notable enhancement is the introduction of haptic feedback from the DualSense controller while navigating the PS5 user interface. When this option is enabled, users will feel the haptic feedback when they move focus from one section to another and when they reach the end of a scrollable section. This feature adds an extra layer of immersion to the user interface and enhances the overall sensory experience of using the console.
Additionally, Sony is introducing a new accessibility feature that allows users to assign a second controller to one account, essentially using it as an assist controller. This feature is particularly useful for players who may need assistance completing challenging parts of a game or navigating the PS5 UI. It provides greater accessibility and inclusivity for a wide range of users.
Furthermore, Sony is making improvements to the social aspects of the PS5. Players will now be able to invite others to a closed party without adding them to a group. Additionally, inviting friends to parties is not limited to individual invitations but can now be extended to entire groups. Similar to the functionality in popular communication platform Discord, users will also be able to preview someone’s screen share before joining a party. Additionally, it will be easier to identify which friends are currently in parties through the friends tab. Sony is also introducing emoji reactions for messages, allowing users to express themselves in a fun and easy way.
To participate in Sony’s PS5 beta program and gain access to these exciting features, users can sign up on the official PlayStation website. As with previous beta updates, it is expected that these enhancements will be made available to all PS5 consoles in the coming months, ensuring that all users can benefit from the latest improvements and enjoy an enhanced gaming and entertainment experience on the console.
