Sony has provided more information about its upcoming PlayStation Portal remote player, a dedicated remote play device for the PlayStation 5. This handheld device allows users to stream games from their PS5 console, allowing them to play remotely via WiFi even when someone else is using the TV or when they are in another room.
The PlayStation Portal remote player resembles a tablet that is wedged between two halves of a DualSense controller. It features an eight-inch LCD screen that delivers 1080p visuals at 60 frames per second, ensuring a high-quality gaming experience. Additionally, it incorporates DualSense features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, enhancing immersion and gameplay.
One notable feature of the PlayStation Portal remote player is the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack. This allows users to connect their own wired headphones or Sony’s own sets of earbuds, as there is no Bluetooth function available on the device.
However, there are some limitations to the PlayStation Portal remote player. It does not support PS VR2 games, meaning users will still need to connect their PS VR2 headset directly to the PS5 console to play VR games. Furthermore, cloud game streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium is not supported, and users will have to install a game on their PS5 to play it remotely on the PlayStation Portal.
The PlayStation Portal remote player is expected to launch later this year at a price of $200 in the US, £200 in the UK, €220 in the rest of Europe, and 29,980 Yen in Japan.
In addition to the PlayStation Portal remote player, Sony has also announced its first wireless earbuds for the PS5, called Pulse Explore earbuds, and a new headset called Pulse Elite. Both of these audio devices support low latency lossless audio from the PS5 and the handheld console through Sony’s new PlayStation Link technology.
To connect the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset to the PS5, a USB adapter is required. The PlayStation Link technology will also be supported on PC and Mac. Multipoint connectivity is available on both devices, allowing users to connect them simultaneously to their PS5 and a Bluetooth device, such as a phone, enabling them to easily answer calls while gaming.
Both the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset feature custom-designed planar magnetic drivers, making them the first PlayStation audio devices to include this technology. Sony claims that this delivers an audiophile-level listening experience normally found in premium headphones for professional sound engineers.
The Pulse Explore earbuds come with dual mics and AI-enhanced noise rejection to filter out background noise. They also include a charging case for convenience. The Pulse Elite headset offers similar features for handling background audio and includes a retractable boom mic. Sony is bundling in a charging hangar for the headphones as well.
Sony has not yet announced specific release dates for the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset, but they will be available at a price point similar to the PlayStation Portal remote player: $200 in the US, £200 in the UK, €220 in the rest of Europe, and 29,980 Yen in Japan.
Overall, Sony is expanding its gaming ecosystem by providing dedicated devices and accessories that enhance the gaming experience for PlayStation 5 users. The PlayStation Portal remote player, Pulse Explore earbuds, and Pulse Elite headset offer features like remote gaming, high-quality audio, and immersive gameplay, catering to the needs of gamers who want flexibility and superior performance.
