The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given the all-clear for the second test flight of SpaceX’s Starship rocket. This news comes after the FAA determined that SpaceX met all safety, environmental, policy, and financial responsibility requirements for the launch. This announcement from the FAA comes after it was revealed that SpaceX had implemented 63 actions on the Starship and at the launch site in response to a previous mishap.
SpaceX has confirmed that it is targeting November 17th for the test flight, with a two-hour launch window starting at 8 AM ET. This date comes after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared a video of the fully assembled Starship vehicle on its launchpad, stating that it would be ready to launch following FAA license approval. Musk also mentioned that the necessary updates had been made for the FAA to approve further Starship tests.
The unfolding of events leading up to this test flight began after the first test flight resulted in damage to the surrounding area and criticism from environmental activists and local residents near the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Debris from the explosion known to have struck at least one vehicle. In order to secure approval for a second flight, SpaceX needed to obtain a license modification from the FAA covering all safety, environmental, and other applicable regulatory requirements. To address concerns, SpaceX detailed a list of enhancements that have been made to the Starship for the upcoming test.
The second flight of the Starship rocket will debut a hot-stage separation system and a new electronic Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system for Super Heavy Raptor engines, in addition to reinforcements to the pad foundation and a water-cooled steel flame deflector, among other enhancements. If all goes well (subject to the usual preflight checks and weather conditions), then this Starship will fly for 90 minutes after launch before making its own vertical descent into the Pacific Ocean.
