Steve Carell is set to make his Broadway debut this spring in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. The adaptation, penned by Heidi Schreck and directed by Lila Neugebauer, is scheduled to begin previews at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on April 2, 2024, and open on April 24.
In this classic play, Sonya (played by Alison Pill) and her uncle Vanya (Steve Carell) live on a family farm in isolation, only to have their lives upended by Sonya’s sick father (Alfred Molina) and his wife (Anika Noni Rose), who move in with them. The cast also includes William Jackson Harper as Astrov, Jayne Houdyshell as Mama Voinitski, and Mia Katigbak as Marina.
The play will feature sets by Mimi Lien, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Lap Chi Chu and Elizabeth Harper, and sound by Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.
Steve Carell is best known for his role as Michael Scott on The Office, as well as his work in films such as Crazy, Stupid, Love, Little Miss Sunshine, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. He recently appeared in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and completed production on John Krasinski’s film, If.
William Jackson Harper, who played Chidi on NBC’s The Good Place, has also appeared in films such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Midsommar. He has made several stage appearances, including in the recent Off-Broadway production of Primary Trust and in the Broadway play, All the Way.
Alfred Molina returns to Broadway after appearing as Tevye in the 2004 production of Fiddler on the Roof and Red in 2010, in addition to his extensive filmography.
Stage veteran Jayne Houdyshell has appeared in productions including the recent revival of The Music Man, A Doll’s House, Part 2, and The Humans, as well as on-screen roles in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Only Murders in the Building.
Anika Noni Rose has previously appeared on Broadway in Caroline, or Change, Raisin in the Sun, and Cat on A Hot Tin Roof, in addition to her work in film and television.
Alison Pill previously appeared on Broadway in Three Tall Women and will next star in M. Night Shyamalan’s feature film, Good Grades.
Mia Katigbak, who makes her Broadway debut with this role, recently appeared in Atlantic Theatre’s Infinite Life, in addition to several previous Off-Broadway roles.
