TikTok now lets creators label AI-generated content

TikTok, the popular social media platform known for its short-form videos, is introducing new labeling tools to help users identify content that has been created or enhanced using artificial intelligence (AI). This move comes after TikTok recently added a range of filters that heavily rely on AI, including an image generator to create unique backgrounds for videos. To make it clearer which filters utilize generative AI, they will now have “AI” included somewhere in their names.

These new labeling tools are not limited to TikTok-approved filters; users can apply the label to any content that has been entirely generated or significantly edited by AI, regardless of its source. This means that even outside content creators or platforms like Disney+ could have utilized these tools. For instance, Disney+ could have taken advantage of these labeling tools when the show “Secret Invasion” premiered, which features AI-generated opening credits.

It’s important to note that TikTok’s new labeling tools are not optional. According to the platform’s community guidelines, any AI-generated content that includes “realistic images, audio, or video” must be labeled as such. The purpose of these labels is to provide viewers with context and prevent the potential spread of misleading or deceptive content. However, TikTok allows users to use alternative forms of disclosure, such as stickers or captions, to convey the AI-generated nature of the content without violating any community guidelines.

Recognizing that mistakes can occur when relying on users to label their content accurately, TikTok is developing its own algorithm that will automatically label AI-generated posts. However, no specific timeline has been announced for the launch of these in-house labeling tools. TikTok worked closely with its safety advisory councils, as well as industry and academic experts, to develop the aforementioned labeling tools and filters.

In addition to implementing these labeling tools, TikTok is committed to following the Partnership on AI’s Responsible Practices for Synthetic Media. The Partnership on AI is a collaborative effort aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in the field of AI. TikTok’s commitment to these responsible practices demonstrates its dedication to ensuring the ethical use of AI technology on its platform.

To further engage with its community and foster discussions surrounding AI, TikTok will collaborate with the nonprofit organization Digital Moment to host roundtable discussions with young community members. These roundtables will provide a platform for dialogue about the advancements, challenges, and impact of AI technology. By involving its users in these discussions, TikTok hopes to create a more inclusive and informed community.

In conclusion, TikTok’s introduction of labeling tools for AI-generated content is a significant step towards ensuring transparency on its platform. By allowing users and content creators to clearly indicate when AI has been used, TikTok aims to provide viewers with context and mitigate the potential spread of misleading content. The development of an algorithm to automatically label AI-generated posts further emphasizes TikTok’s commitment to responsible AI practices. Additionally, through partnerships and roundtable discussions, TikTok seeks to engage its young community members in conversations about AI and its impact. As TikTok continues to evolve, it demonstrates its dedication to fostering a safe and authentic environment for its users.
