The Philadelphia Eagles experienced two frightening moments during their preseason game on Thursday night, as two of their players sustained scary injuries and required stretchers to leave the field.
The incidents occurred in the second half of the Eagles’ 18-18 tie against the Browns in Philadelphia. Receiver Tyrie Cleveland and defensive lineman Moro Ojomo both hurt their necks on separate plays.
The injury to Tyrie Cleveland was particularly horrifying. In the third quarter of the game, he jumped up to catch a pass but landed awkwardly on his head upon coming down. He remained on the turf for several minutes before being strapped to a backboard and carted off the field.
A video posted on Twitter by Dave Lorenz, a doctor of physical therapy, showed the moment Tyrie Cleveland landed hard on his head/neck and shoulder area. The video garnered widespread attention and concern for Cleveland’s well-being.
Moro Ojomo’s injury came later in the game when he was attempting to make a tackle on a scrambling quarterback. His teammate accidentally collided with the back of his neck, causing him to remain on the ground for several minutes. Ojomo also required a stretcher to leave the field.
The Philadelphia Eagles quickly ruled both players out of the game, but provided some relief by stating that they had movement in all their extremities. Head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged that he had not yet spoken to the doctors for further updates on their condition.
In addition to Cleveland and Ojomo, four other Eagles players were also injured during the game, including first-round pick Nolan Smith. Thankfully, their injuries were not considered as serious as those sustained by Cleveland and Ojomo.
Despite the string of injuries, the Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for their regular-season opener on September 10 against the New England Patriots. The team will continue to monitor the recovery of their injured players and make appropriate decisions regarding their participation in upcoming games.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the risks football players face every time they step onto the field. The physicality and intensity of the sport can lead to serious injuries, and it is important for teams and leagues to prioritize player safety and take appropriate measures to prevent and address such incidents.
Football fans and the Eagles’ organization will continue to watch closely for updates on the health and recovery of Tyrie Cleveland and Moro Ojomo, hoping for their speedy return to the game they love.
