Two University of Buffalo football players, Blake Hiligh and Zachary Pilarcek, are facing charges of animal abuse after they were caught on video beating a 4-year-old miniature Poodle with a leather belt. The incident occurred on June 13 inside an apartment in Amherst, N.Y. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office is handling the case and has charged both players with one misdemeanor charge of overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals.
The video shows Hiligh, a cornerback, and Pilarcek, a tight end, repeatedly striking the dog in what appears to be an attempt to discipline it. The footage was later uploaded to social media. Authorities were alerted to the incident and seized the Poodle, named Kobe, who was then transported to a local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Kobe received treatment for abrasions and bruises.
On June 14, both Hiligh and Pilarcek were brought before the court and pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following the arraignment, Hiligh’s attorney expressed remorse for his client’s actions and stated that they love their dogs and pets, but sometimes discipline is necessary. The attorney asserted that they do not believe the discipline was carried out in a cruel manner.
Despite their plea, both players have been dismissed from the UB football team due to the serious nature of the allegations. The university has yet to provide a comment on the situation. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and Hiligh is scheduled to appear in court for another hearing in early August, while Pilarcek’s next court date is set for late July.
