Unstoppable Domains (UD), a platform that enables users to register Web3 usernames, has recently introduced an instant messaging system for its users. This development was announced by principal engineer Aaron Quirk on August 23. With this new feature, owners of UD-registered usernames, such as .crypto, .wallet, and .polygon, can now communicate with each other across various apps that utilize the extensible message transport protocol (XMTP). Some of the apps that currently support this messaging integration include the UD iOS app and website, Coinbase Wallet, and Lens protocol apps like Lenster and Buttrfly.
The messaging system offered by UD relies on XMTP to ensure the security and encryption of messages sent between users. Importantly, even if UD ceases operations in the future, the messages will still be accessible and preserved, providing users with continued access to their communication history. This adds an extra layer of reassurance for users who rely on messaging services through Web3 usernames.
Web3 usernames have been in existence since 2017, providing an alternative method for crypto users to associate their lengthy crypto addresses with more easily memorable names. For instance, a complex crypto address like 0xd8dA6BF26964aF9D7eEd9e03E53415D37aA96045 can be simplified into the more user-friendly “Vitalik.eth.” Initially, these usernames were primarily used to receive payments. However, efforts are being made to expand the usability of Web3 usernames to include additional applications such as messaging.
Coinbase Wallet was one of the first projects to explore this expansion, launching an instant messaging feature on July 12. This functionality allowed users to send messages to each other using their .eth or .cb.id usernames. Furthermore, the integration between Coinbase Wallet and the Lens social media protocol enabled users to leverage XMTP for messaging purposes as well.
While this integration included usernames registered through various platforms, it did not encompass usernames registered via Unstoppable Domains, such as those ending in .crypto or .polygon. Nonetheless, the recent announcement by Aaron Quirk confirmed that this issue has been resolved. Users of Lens apps and Coinbase Wallet can now exchange messages using their Unstoppable Domains usernames alongside other available methods.
Quirk also revealed that Unstoppable Domains is working on an integration with Push Protocol. This integration will allow username owners to subscribe and receive notifications from Web3 projects. Consequently, project owners will be able to send messages to users through the Unstoppable Domains app or website.
In addition to the messaging system, Unstoppable Domains has made other strategic moves in the industry. On April 26, the platform partnered with Binance.US, enabling users to register usernames ending in .BinanceUS. Furthermore, a truce was established with Ethereum Name Service (ENS) on July 17, allowing ENS .eth names to be sold in the Unstoppable Domains store for the first time. These partnerships and collaborations demonstrate the platform’s commitment to expanding its reach and improving the overall experience for its users.
As the world of Web3 continues to evolve, the adoption of Web3 usernames is expected to grow. Recent advancements, such as the introduction of messaging features, have further enhanced the utility and convenience of these usernames. Unstoppable Domains, alongside other projects in the Web3 space, are driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with decentralized technologies. With the launch of the instant messaging system, Unstoppable Domains is empowering users to communicate seamlessly within the Web3 ecosystem while maintaining their privacy and security.
