Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing emerged victorious in the thrilling Brazilian Grand Prix, which took place at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo. This race served as round 21 of the 2023 F1 World Championship and added another win to Verstappen’s already impressive record. With this win, Verstappen now has a total of 17 victories this season, setting a remarkable record that may continue to grow as there are still two races remaining on the calendar.
Despite already securing the season’s titles, Verstappen and his team displayed no signs of relenting. Verstappen showcased his dominance throughout the weekend by securing pole position in Friday’s qualifying session and triumphing at Saturday’s standalone Sprint race.
Notably, McLaren’s Lando Norris delivered an exceptional performance, securing second place in the main race, finishing approximately eight seconds behind Verstappen. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin also made a strong comeback, securing third place, albeit 34 seconds behind Verstappen’s pace.
The race commenced with some pre-race drama as Charles Leclerc of Ferrari spun off during the formation lap due to faulty hydraulics, ultimately leading to his retirement. However, Verstappen smoothly took the lead after a slight challenge from Norris and dominated the race.
Unfortunately, the race was marred by a heavy crash between Alex Albon of Williams and Kevin Magnussen of Haas, resulting in both drivers retiring from the race and the deployment of red flags. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and AlphaTauri’s Daniel Ricciardo also suffered damage due to the crash, forcing them to pit for repairs.
After the restart, Norris once again put pressure on Verstappen but could not surpass him, ultimately falling back. Meanwhile, both Mercedes-Benz AMG drivers encountered issues with their cars. George Russell was forced to retire due to an oil temperature problem, while Lewis Hamilton faced multiple difficulties with his car but managed to persist. Additionally, Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu retired due to technical problems with their vehicles.
Following the weekend’s action, Verstappen’s commanding lead in the 2023 Drivers’ Championship stands at 524 points. His teammate Sergio Perez of Red Bull is in second place with 258 points, and Hamilton of Mercedes holds the third position with 226 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull occupies the top spot with 782 points, followed by Mercedes with 382 points and Ferrari with 362 points.
The next race on the calendar is the highly anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will take place in two weeks.
