On August 6, 2023, two police officers from the La Mesa Police Department in California confronted a suspect with an active felony warrant for burglary. The incident took place in the parking lot of a condominium complex located at 8000 University Avenue. Prior to approaching the suspect, the officers had confirmed the status of the warrant and obtained a photograph of the suspect. At approximately 4:13 p.m., the officers observed the suspect standing outside the passenger side of a vehicle in the parking lot. As they approached him, the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it directly at one of the officers.
It is reported that the suspect attempted multiple times to fire at the officer, but the firearm malfunctioned. In response, one of the officers discharged his firearm multiple times as the suspect started to run through the parking lot. The suspect, while running towards University Avenue, appeared to be trying to manipulate or clear the malfunction in the firearm. The officer continued to discharge his weapon, hitting the suspect multiple times in the upper body, ultimately incapacitating him and causing him to drop the firearm. The officers immediately provided first aid and called for paramedics, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
The La Mesa Police Department identified the suspect as Jason Hampton, a 41-year-old white male from La Mesa. The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Brian Heller, who has been a member of the department for approximately six years. Officer Heller is currently assigned as a Master Patrol Officer in La Mesa and has been placed on paid leave in accordance with the department’s standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting. The second officer present did not discharge his weapon during the incident.
Following the incident, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit, as part of the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. Detectives are actively gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It has been reported that a loaded 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
The preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that a passing vehicle was struck by a bullet, although the motorist inside the vehicle was not injured. Additionally, it was determined that at least one round struck a building within the parking lot.
The La Mesa Police Department is committed to transparency and accountability, and the investigation will provide a thorough understanding of the events that occurred. The department’s priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of the community it serves.
