Warner Bros. Discovery has appointed Andrew Georgiou as the head of its media business in the U.K. and Ireland. Georgiou will also continue serving as the President and Managing Director of WBD Sports Europe, which oversees Eurosport across Europe and TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland.
Georgiou’s new position will involve overseeing several TV channel brands, including Discovery, TLC, Quest, Quest Red, Really, Cartoon Network, Eurosport, and the recently launched TNT Sports. He will also be responsible for managing WBD’s streaming service, discovery+, as well as consumer products and home entertainment. Additionally, Georgiou will provide support to the local Warner Bros. theatrical business.
Georgiou joined the company in 2019 as the President of Eurosport, after serving as the CEO of Lagardère Sports and Entertainment. Known for his leadership and team-building abilities, he played a pivotal role in striking a joint venture with BT Group, resulting in the creation of TNT Sports. This new sports offering, which will eventually replace Eurosport in the UK and Ireland, features premium sports content such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC, Boxing, and WWE. TNT Sports can be accessed through pay TV channels, discovery+, and the BT Sports app.
Gerhard Zeiler, International President at Warner Bros. Discovery, praised Georgiou’s business acumen and ability to execute deals. He expressed his excitement about working closely with Georgiou to shape the company’s future path and ensure continued success during these transformative times.
Georgiou expressed gratitude for being entrusted with the U.K. and Ireland region and acknowledged the strength of the leadership team. His expanded role aligns with the company’s ambition to grow its entertainment and sports offerings across TV networks and streaming services. With the recent launch of TNT Sports on all linear platforms, as well as discovery+ serving as the streaming home of TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland, Georgiou emphasized that there is no better time to begin implementing their plans.
As Georgiou takes on his new responsibilities, Warner Bros. Discovery aims to leverage his experience and strategic vision to enhance its presence in the U.K. and Ireland market. With a diverse range of TV channel brands, a robust streaming service, and a strong lineup of sports content, the company is well-positioned to cater to the entertainment needs of consumers in the region. Georgiou’s leadership will play a vital role in driving the company’s growth and ensuring its continued success.
