Officer Hammel immediately instructed Mendez to put the knife down, but Mendez did not comply. Officer Hammel continued to calmly persuade Mendez to drop the knife for nearly two minutes. However, Mendez suddenly ran down the stairs towards Officer Hammel while still holding the knife. At that point, Officer Hammel discharged his service weapon three times, striking Mendez. Hammel quickly secured the knife from Mendez’s possession, called for backup and medical assistance, and was seen placing his hands on the gunshot wounds to prevent excessive bleeding. Mendez was immediately transported to Old Bridge Medical Center but was pronounced deceased at 4:47 p.m.
