In the second season finale of Only Murders in the Building, viewers were left with a cliffhanger that promised a new murder mystery for the trio of true crime podcasters played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Season three of the show picks up a year after the events of the previous season, and the murder takes place outside of their usual building setting. The two-episode premiere of the season titled “The Show Must” introduces a new victim, played by Paul Rudd, who initially survives his apparent onstage death from the previous season. However, his resurrection is short-lived as he is found dead on top of an elevator. This sets the stage for Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora to dive into a brand new mystery.
The third season brings in iconic actress Meryl Streep, who plays the struggling actress Loretta Durkin. Loretta is a cast member of Oliver’s new Broadway show, “Death Rattle,” and her relationship with Ben, the murder victim, becomes a central point of interest. As Oliver’s new love interest, Loretta’s motives come into question. Did she kill Ben to open the door for a romance with Oliver? While her motives may seem superficial, her suspicious dialogue adds weight to her character as a top suspect.
Another suspect is Dickie Glenroy, played by Jeremy Shamos, who is Ben’s brother and manager. He is responsible for Ben’s strict diet due to his role as superhero Cobro. With access to Ben’s food, it is possible that Dickie poisoned him, but the attempt went awry. Dickie’s mysterious phone call with Ben before his death adds to his suspicious behavior.
A significant addition to the cast is Jesse Williams, who plays Tobert, Ben’s documentarian. Tobert’s character has a suspicious line of dialogue that hints at his possible involvement in the murder. Could he be the filmmaker turned murderer?
The producers of “Death Rattle,” Donna and Clifford DiMeo, portrayed by Linda Emond and Wesley Taylor, respectively, also raise suspicion. Their inappropriate behavior and clear dissatisfaction with Ben raise questions about their involvement. The name “Clifford” may also be a nod to one of Martin Short’s previous monstrous alter-egos, suggesting a connection to the character’s murderous tendencies.
Considering the residents of the Arconia building, where the murder takes place, Howard, played by Michael Cyril Creighton, stands out as a prime suspect. As a series regular in season three, Howard’s upgraded importance could be a hint towards his involvement. Additionally, his casting as Oliver’s assistant instead of a role in the play could be a motive for wanting to ruin the show and commit murder.
While the premiere introduces several suspects, the true identity of the killer remains a mystery. As the season progresses, more suspects may emerge, and the whiteboard of potential culprits will likely expand. Only Murders in the Building continues to keep audiences guessing, and fans will have to tune in to discover who ultimately killed Ben Glenroy.
With the release of new episodes every Tuesday on Hulu, audiences can expect a thrilling season full of twists and turns as the podcasting trio delves deeper into the murder mystery. Will they be able to uncover the truth and bring justice to the victims? Only time will tell.
