Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group, is expanding its lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) with a new full-size SUV that is expected to be badged as the GV90. The prototype of the GV90 has been recently spotted testing, and it features Genesis’ signature design elements.
The heavily disguised prototype showcases Genesis’ split bar design for its head and taillamps, similar to the mid-size GV80 SUV. It also has a sealed grille, reminiscent of the design used on the compact Electrified GV70. The rear fascia of the vehicle has cutouts for exhaust tips, but noticeably the tips are missing. It is speculated that the rear fascia is a makeshift unit used to hide the identity of the vehicle’s powertrain, which is anticipated to be exclusively electric.
While the prototype bears some resemblance to the GV80, it is clear that the rear section of the vehicle is longer. The design of the side windows is also unique, with the rear doors featuring two pieces of glass compared to a single unit on the GV80. The chrome trim running along the bottom of the side windows also has a more gradual upward angle towards the rear of the GV90 prototype.
Reports from Korean media first revealed plans for the GV90 in 2021, with an initial launch timeframe expected in 2023. However, it is now speculated that the full-size electric SUV will debut late next year or in early 2025, potentially as a 2025 model. This aligns with the scheduled start of production at Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant in Georgia, which could be the production site for the GV90. The United States is likely to be the target market for this SUV, and production is set to begin in early 2025.
The GV90 is expected to be built on Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) platform. The IMA platform, announced in 2022, is an evolution of the current Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) design. Unlike the E-GMP, which has different battery systems for each vehicle, the IMA platform will have a standardized battery. It will also feature standardized motors and key chassis components, leading to improved production efficiencies.
Although Genesis has not officially confirmed plans for the GV90, it is speculated that the full-size electric SUV will have third-row seats and a range of at least 300 miles, aligning with the expectations for this class of vehicle. Other luxury automakers, such as Cadillac with its upcoming Escalade IQ and Mercedes-Benz with its EQS SUV, are also venturing into the electric full-size SUV segment. Additionally, Lucid Motors has plans to introduce its large SUV, named the Gravity, in November.
Genesis has ambitious plans to expand its portfolio of electric vehicles. The company has announced that starting from 2025, it will only launch EVs. By 2030, Genesis aims to have at least six EVs in its lineup, with four of them being SUVs. This strategic focus on electric mobility reflects the brand’s commitment to sustainability and the increasing demand for luxury electric vehicles in the market.
With the upcoming launch of the GV90, Genesis positions itself as a strong contender in the luxury electric SUV segment. The brand’s emphasis on design, technology, and performance, coupled with Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to developing advanced electric platforms, indicates a promising future for Genesis as it expands its electrified offerings. Car enthusiasts and luxury seekers alike can look forward to the arrival of the GV90, a full-size electric SUV that embodies the brand’s vision for sustainable and luxurious mobility.
