Kia is further expanding its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) with plans to introduce 14 models in its lineup by 2027, including a compact crossover possibly called the EV4. This announcement comes as the automaker aims to keep up with the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles and meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations.
Recently, a prototype of the EV4 was spotted for the first time, revealing a design that closely resembles Kia’s recently unveiled EV5. The EV5 is a slightly larger compact crossover primarily targeted at the Chinese market. The similar styling cues shared between the two models indicate that the EV4 may feature a similar aesthetic, appealing to the same audience but in a smaller package.
In addition to the EV5, the EV4 is also expected to borrow its design language from the EV9 mid-size SUV, which has been confirmed to hit U.S. showrooms as a 2024 model. This consistency in design across Kia’s EV lineup creates a cohesive brand identity and allows customers to easily recognize and associate these models with Kia’s electric offerings.
While the exact platform used for the EV4 remains unknown, one possibility is the same platform employed by the redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric. The similarities in size between the EV4 prototype and the Kona Electric suggest that the two vehicles could share the same platform, leading to similar performance figures. If this is the case, the EV4 could offer a maximum range estimate of around 260 miles and a peak power output of approximately 201 horsepower.
Alternatively, Kia may opt to utilize Hyundai Motor Group’s flexible E-GMP platform for the EV4. This platform is already in use for the EV5, EV6, and EV9, as well as certain Hyundai and Genesis models. Known for its advanced features, the E-GMP platform boasts an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of bidirectional charging, high-speed charging, and vehicle-to-grid functions. With charging speeds capable of adding nearly 150 miles of range in just 15 minutes, this platform would enhance the EV4’s usability and convenience for owners.
In order to achieve its target of 14 EV models by the end of 2027, Kia has committed to launching at least two new models per year, beginning with the recent introductions of the EV5 and EV9. The EV4 is anticipated to be released in 2024, though its availability in the U.S. market remains uncertain. The same applies for the EV5, although Kia has confirmed the future introduction of a locally manufactured electric pickup truck in the U.S.
Kia’s ambitious EV plans reflect the industry-wide shift towards electrification. As more consumers prioritize sustainability and governments implement stricter emissions regulations, automakers must adapt and offer a diverse range of electric options to remain competitive. Kia’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and its vision for a future dominated by clean and efficient transportation.
With their stylish design, advanced technology, and growing range capabilities, Kia’s upcoming EVs are poised to make a significant impact in the market. As consumers continue to embrace electric vehicles, Kia’s comprehensive lineup will cater to various preferences and requirements, solidifying the brand’s position as a leader in the electric vehicle segment.
