Lotus, the renowned British sports car manufacturer, has been conducting tests on prototypes of its highly anticipated electric sedan, the Emeya. This upcoming model will mark Lotus’ foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market and is set to make its world debut tonight.
Initially referred to as the Type 133, the sedan was officially confirmed by Lotus in 2021, along with the announcement of three other EV models. These include the Eletre, a mid-size SUV which made its debut last year, a compact crossover known as the Type 134, and a sports car named Type 135.
Lotus is planning to release the compact crossover in 2025 and the sports car in 2026. The latter is expected to serve as a spiritual successor to the iconic Elise. Initially, Lotus had been collaborating with French automaker Alpine to develop a joint electric sports car. However, the two companies have decided to pursue independent development paths.
While Lotus has confirmed that the Eletre will be available in the United States by 2024, the automaker has not disclosed any plans regarding the availability of the Emeya or the other upcoming models in the American market. However, if it receives the green light for a U.S. launch, the Emeya is likely to arrive as a 2025 model in 2024.
In terms of design, the Emeya boasts a coupe-like silhouette, reminiscent of traditional Lotus aesthetics. It also incorporates design elements inspired by the Eletre, including the triangular active shutters located in the front fascia’s central intake. Another feature shared between the two models are cameras in place of conventional side mirrors, although this option may not be available in U.S. market versions.
Underneath its sleek exterior, the Emeya is expected to share the same Electric Premium Architecture dedicated EV platform as the Eletre. This platform, utilized in the SUV, can support up to 905 horsepower and 112 kWh of battery capacity. It also enables dual-motor all-wheel drive, air suspension, and fast-charging capabilities at 350 kW. It is likely that the sedan will offer similar specifications and technologies.
The development of the Emeya, alongside the Eletre and the upcoming compact crossover, is being spearheaded by Lotus Technology, a division responsible for the brand’s non-sports car models. Lotus Technology will also oversee the production of these vehicles at a manufacturing facility located in Wuhan, China. In February, the division announced its intention to go public through a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) deal with Nasdaq-listed L Catterton Asia Acquisition Corp, further solidifying Lotus’ commitment to the EV market.
As Lotus continues to expand its EV lineup, the introduction of the Emeya signals a significant milestone for the iconic British automaker. With its blend of classic Lotus design cues and cutting-edge electric technology, the Emeya is poised to make a lasting impression in the luxury sedan segment. Customers eagerly await its world debut and subsequent release, as Lotus takes its first steps towards a greener automotive future.
