In 2023, BMW made a grand appearance at the Munich Auto Show with the unveiling of the 2024 BMW X5 Protection VR6. This updated version of the armored vehicle that first hit the market in 2019 has become the top-selling vehicle of its kind, according to BMW. The X5 Protection VR6 retains the appearance of a standard X5 model but is equipped with integrated armor made from high-strength steel in the body shell, doors, and roof.
BMW has also added an armored partition between the cabin and cargo area, an aluminum under-body splinter guard, and a self-sealing fuel tank to enhance the safety of the vehicle. If desired, customers can choose to add additional underbody and roof armor, as well as flashing lights and flag poles, as optional features.
While the added armoring does result in additional weight, BMW has ensured that the X5 Protection VR6 retains its performance capabilities. It is powered by the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine found in the X5 M60i xDrive, which delivers an impressive output of 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the vehicle features a mild-hybrid system that can provide a temporary 12-hp boost, further enhancing its performance capabilities. With these specifications, the X5 Protection VR6 can achieve a 0-62 mph time of 5.9 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 130 mph.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the X5 Protection VR6 does not compromise. It features power windows and a heated windshield, despite the addition of thicker glass for enhanced security. The interior boasts an M leather steering wheel, four-zone climate control, and sport seats as standard, with the option for leather upholstery. The infotainment system is also the same as other X5 models, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, both housed under a single piece of glass.
BMW has paid attention to the vehicle’s handling and performance characteristics by outfitting it with adaptive M Suspension, an M Sport differential, rear-axle steering, and active roll stabilization, all of which come standard. Chassis tuning specific to the Protection VR6 further enhances the vehicle’s agility and stability.
Production of the X5 Protection VR6 is set to start in 2024 at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. While there are specialty companies available, such as Inkas, that offer armored upgrades for BMW models, the automaker remains committed to building armored vehicles in-house. In addition to the X5 Protection VR6, BMW also plans to debut factory-armored versions of the 7-Series and i7 at the Munich Auto Show.
The BMW X5 Protection VR6 exemplifies the brand’s dedication to providing a high level of safety and security without compromising the performance and comfort expected from a BMW vehicle. With its integrated armor and advanced features, it offers peace of mind to those seeking a vehicle that can withstand potential threats while still delivering a luxurious and dynamic driving experience.
