The Gotham Film & Media Institute recently announced that the highly successful film ‘Barbie,’ produced by Warner Bros., will be receiving the prestigious Gotham Global Icon & Creator Tribute at the upcoming 2023 Gotham Awards. Directed and co-written by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, ‘Barbie’ has dominated the box office this year and is now poised to enter the best picture Oscar race.
Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp praised the film for its inventive world, original script, dynamic filmmaking, emotional and hilarious performances, vibrant set and costume designs, and electrifying original music. The creative team behind ‘Barbie’ successfully transformed the beloved icon from the world of Mattel into a cinematic tour de force, garnering global love and appreciation from audiences.
The Icon & Creator Tribute was specifically created for this year’s Gotham Awards to recognize cultural icons and the filmmakers responsible for bringing their stories to life. This prestigious tribute honors and celebrates the entire creative team behind Gerwig’s film, including acclaimed individuals such as co-writer Noah Baumbach, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Sarah Greenwood, set decorator Katie Spencer, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, editor Nick Houy, visual effects supervisor Glen Pratt, music supervisor George Drakoulias, and composing team Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Greta Gerwig herself has received three Gotham Awards nominations throughout her career, once as an actor for her role in Baumbach’s ‘Greenberg,’ and twice as a writer-director for ‘Lady Bird.’
In addition to ‘Barbie,’ the Gotham Awards has also announced other distinguished tributes, including Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’ receiving the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute, Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’ receiving the Icon & Creator Tribute for Innovation, ‘Rustin’ receiving the Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice, and Ben Affleck’s ‘Air’ receiving the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute.
