Ford has filed four recent patent applications that envision a more elaborate and reconfigurable pickup truck bed. These patents show innovative ways to extend the length of both the bed floor and walls, as well as adding deployable ramps and steps for easier access. The goal is to enhance the functionality and versatility of pickup truck beds.
The first patent filing, titled “Extendable Cargo Bed Floor,” describes a system of movable floor sections that would allow the bed floor to extend out past the rear bumper of a pickup. The floor sections could fold up accordion-style and be stowed at the front of the bed when not needed. Alternatively, there is also the possibility of a section that slides straight out. This extendable bed floor could be complemented by a split-opening tailgate, with the split in the middle, allowing the two tailgate sections to serve as bed-wall extensions. Furthermore, these tailgate sections could open 180 degrees, creating a work space with tool hooks and auxiliary lights on the inside.
The second patent filing, titled “Extendable Cargo Bed Floor and Cargo Bed Side Walls,” applies a similar concept to the bed’s walls. In this example, the bed floor still folds out in sections, but the rear section of the bed also telescopes out. The inner bed walls extend, taking the taillights and tailgate with them. This design allows for even more flexibility in bed length and cargo capacity.
In addition to extending the bed floor and walls, Ford has also considered adding a deployable rear step to the extendable bed floor system. This step would be similar to those found on their current pickups and could fold up into one of the floor sections. This placement of the step in the floor section enables the split-folding tailgate design described in the first patent filing.
Finally, a fourth patent filing shows how a ramp system could be added to the extended bed floor. The ramp would slide out from the rearmost section of the floor and stow away when not needed. This feature would greatly enhance the ability to load and unload heavy items, such as motorcycles or ATVs.
While automakers frequently patent ideas that don’t make it to production, the way all of the features described in these four patent applications were designed to work together suggests that Ford engineers have at least thought this through. It shows that Ford is actively exploring ways to improve the functionality and versatility of pickup truck beds.
These innovations have the potential to revolutionize the pickup truck market. By offering a reconfigurable bed floor and walls, deployable ramps and steps, and a split-folding tailgate, Ford could provide pickup truck owners with unmatched convenience and flexibility. Whether it’s for work or recreational purposes, these features would make it easier to transport and access various types of cargo.
Overall, Ford’s patent filings demonstrate their commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of what pickup trucks can offer. While it remains to be seen if and when these ideas will become a reality, they certainly provide a glimpse into the potential future of pickup truck design. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in this space.
