Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its “close-to-production” Concept CLA Class EV, which promises a long range and rapid charging capabilities. This four-door sedan is the first in the company’s line of Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) EVs, which will include a shooting brake and two SUVs. The concept was showcased at Munich’s IAA Mobility motor show and is expected to be available as a real EV by late 2024.
The MMA platform was specifically designed for Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level CLA Class vehicles as an “electric first” design. The concept has similar dimensions to the current CLA sedan, measuring 185 inches long. Its aerodynamic shape allows for efficient movement through the air, and the hood is longer to accommodate the option for internal combustion engines. While certain features, such as unique wheels and LED lighting, may not make it to the final production version, the overall design showcases Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electric mobility.
Unlike some of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance EVs, the CLA Class focuses on efficiency and fast charging speeds rather than sheer power. It utilizes an 800-volt architecture and a single rear-mounted 235HP motor borrowed from the Vision EQXX concept. This motor is designed with minimal reliance on rare earth materials. To address the impact of cold weather on the range, the CLA Class incorporates a new heat-pump system to regulate battery temperature and keep occupants warm.
The Concept CLA Class boasts an impressive WLPT range of 466 miles, which is equivalent to around 400 miles in EPA terms. This equates to a remarkable efficiency of around 150 MPGe. Additionally, the vehicle can add approximately 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes, thanks to its rapid charging capabilities. While Mercedes-Benz hasn’t disclosed the battery size, it’s speculated to be under 100 kWh. The battery design includes anodes with silicon-oxide to enhance energy density. The company also plans to offer a less efficient lithium-iron phosphate option at a lower cost.
Inside the vehicle, the concept version showcases several flashy features that may not make it to the production model. These include a water-cooled processor on the floor, silver-colored leather seats, an engraved moonroof, and a dashboard-wide “Superscreen” with minimal physical controls. However, the production version is expected to feature design elements consistent with other Mercedes-Benz EQ electric models, creating a luxurious interior.
Another anticipated feature of the electric CLA production model is Level 3 automated driving. While this feature will not be available at launch, the vehicle will be equipped with the sensors required for level 3 autonomy. Mercedes-Benz plans to enable this feature through over-the-air updates in the future. As more details emerge in the coming months, such as battery size, final range, charging specifications, and most importantly, the price, it will become clearer how the CLA Class compares to Tesla’s EVs.
