Door.com, formerly known as Latch, is a commercial access company founded by Jamie Siminoff, the creator of Ring. While Latch initially focused on smart locks, it is now expanding its offerings to provide an overarching platform for independent service workers such as drivers, housekeepers, and dog walkers. The goal is to provide these professionals with a platform to grow their businesses and access new opportunities.
Jamie Siminoff’s entrepreneurial journey began with the founding of Ring in 2013. In 2018, he sold the company to Amazon but continued to work there until May of this year. Shortly after leaving Amazon, Siminoff became the CEO of Latch when the company acquired his stealth startup, Honest Day’s Work. Honest Day’s Work aimed to create a comprehensive building operating system, facilitating seamless experiences for owners, residents, and third parties like guests, couriers, and service providers.
Latch is renowned for its line of smart locks that enable landlords to manage access to their buildings. In addition to smart locks, the company developed LatchOS, a smart building operating system that offers control over various smart devices, including the smart locks, via the Latch app. The recent rebranding to Door.com signifies Latch’s expansion and the integration of Honest Day’s Work’s vision into its platform. While Latch will continue to exist as a subbrand under Door.com, Siminoff plans to launch a series of other services in the future.
Siminoff believes that Latch’s previous brand name was too limiting considering the company’s broader vision. He states, “Even if you go back to Latch before I was part of it… they had this vision of services and other things. I think Latch was too constrained on expanding that vision.” Door.com allows the company to break free from this constraint and pursue a more comprehensive range of services.
One of the first services that Door.com is launching is called James. Siminoff describes James as a glimpse into the company’s larger plan. It is an app designed for professional drivers, offering them a platform to book and manage clients. Drivers will receive 100 percent of the profit, while riders will be charged a 5 percent fee, which Door.com will collect.
The company has not yet disclosed the exact details of future services, but it intends to adapt its path based on the success of James. Siminoff envisions a world where Door.com masters one service vertical before expanding into multiple other areas. However, the primary focus is on acquiring more knowledge and insights before venturing into additional verticals. Door.com is set to launch officially sometime in the next year.
Door.com’s rebranding represents an exciting shift in the company’s mission. With its new platform, the company aims to empower independent service workers and help them grow their businesses. By providing a centralized platform, Door.com creates opportunities for drivers, housekeepers, dog walkers, and other professionals to connect with clients and streamline their operations. With future services on the horizon, Door.com is poised to become a leader in the space, transforming how independent service workers operate and thrive in today’s economy.
