Volkswagen recently unveiled the latest generation of their global Passat model, commemorating the nameplate’s 50th anniversary. However, this new Passat will not be available in the United States, and there are no plans to introduce a sedan variant either. The new Passat will exclusively be offered as a wagon, known as the Variant, and is set to go on sale in early 2024.
Compared to its predecessor, the new Passat is larger and more powerful. It measures approximately 193.6 inches long, which is 5.6 inches longer than the outgoing model. The wheelbase has also been extended by about two inches, resulting in increased passenger space. Additionally, the rear seats can be folded down to provide a storage capacity of nearly 68 cubic feet.
Volkswagen will offer a range of powertrain options for the new Passat, including turbocharged gas and diesel engines. Some configurations will feature mild- and plug-in hybrid systems. The most powerful variant will be a plug-in hybrid with a combined output of 268 hp. The vehicle will be equipped with a 19.7-kwh battery that is estimated to provide an electric range of approximately 60 miles.
Inside the cabin, Volkswagen has focused on creating a more luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere. The use of improved materials and larger screens contribute to an upmarket look and feel. The Passat will come standard with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen. Buyers will also have the option to upgrade to a 15.0-inch infotainment display.
The new Passat is built on an updated version of Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, which is designed for high-volume, front-wheel-drive vehicles with internal-combustion engines. This platform is also utilized in other VW Group models such as the Golf and a forthcoming Skoda Superb, which is expected to be available in both sedan and wagon variants.
Production of the new Passat will take place at a Volkswagen Group plant located in Bratislava, Slovakia.
While the United States will not receive the latest Passat, VW has other plans for the American market. The company will soon introduce the 2024 ID.7 electric vehicle, a mid-size hatchback that aims to cater to the growing demand for electric mobility. Additionally, there are rumors of an ID.7 wagon variant currently undergoing testing, which could potentially be offered in the US as well.
In conclusion, Volkswagen has unveiled a new generation of the Passat, exclusively available as a wagon in international markets. This larger and more powerful model offers a range of powertrain options, including plug-in hybrid variants. The interior features improved materials and larger screens, providing a more luxurious experience. While the US market misses out on this latest Passat, Volkswagen has plans to introduce electric vehicles, including the 2024 ID.7, in the near future.
